Sustainable Fisheries Partnership

The partnership between Thai Union and the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership will compliment and enhance efforts of both organizations, while amplifying the impact to achieve Healthy Living, Healthy Oceans. The United Nations World Food Programme with support from Thai Union has launched a study to model the impact of a planned universal national school meals program on the economy in Kenya. The lessons learned from this project could show an ability to dramatically improve the nutrition of schoolchildren while concurrently boosting local economies with one single policy. Additionally, demonstrable successes could pave the way for the potential application of similar initiatives on a global level in both developed and developing nations.

USAID is the lead U.S. Government agency that works to end extreme global poverty and enable resilient, democratic societies to realize their potential.

Thai Union has a technical cooperation partnership with USAID, the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, and the Coral Triangle Initiative for Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security, in the Oceans and Fisheries Partnership. The partnership supports the development of a transparent and financially sustainable catch documentation and traceability system to help ensure that fisheries resources are legally caught and properly labeled.

The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) Crab Council is an association of US seafood companies, working to maintain successful crab fisheries for international businesses as well as local economies.

Our U.S. subsidiary, Chicken of the Sea, is actively involved in the NFI Crab Council of U.S. importers. Together, we advocate for regulations on the use of minimum size crabs and egg-bearing female crabs, among all Asian supplier countries (Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, and Sri Lanka).

Legambiente – which roughly translates into League for the Environment – is a key partner for our Italian brand, Mareblu. It is Italy’s largest environmental organization, with more than 115,000 members; it represents the UNEP National Committee for Italy and is a leading member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Through its partnership with Legambiente, Mareblu is engaged in beach cleaning projects, turtle protection initiatives, schools programs to teach young people about nutrition and health, and surveys on marine litter and the coastal environment.

International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF)

The ISSF comprises leaders in the seafood industry with a shared concern about the future of global tuna fisheries. Its initiatives work towards long-term conservation and sustainable use of global tuna stocks, reducing bycatch and promoting tuna ecosystem health.

As a founding and active member of the ISSF, we comply fully with the organization’s conservation measures and annual audits. We have committed to only purchase seafood from large-scale purse seiners that are registered on the ISSF’s Proactive Vessel Register (PVR). We also support ISSF’s work in turtle conservation projects globally.

Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI)

GSSI is a platform that brings partners together from across the global seafood sector to share knowledge and drive change by coming up with solutions to challenges in the sector.

It was set up to bring more clarity into the marketplace on the growing number of seafood certification schemes, helping to make purchasing decisions more efficient by offering greater choice and driving down costs, while at the same time promoting environmental sustainability.

As a member of the GSSI, we are supporting the development of globally recognized seafood certification schemes.

Asian Seafood Improvement Collaborative (ASIC)

ASIC is a made up of group of international stakeholders to foster dialog and build consensus throughout the Asian seafood industry. ASIC looks to tackle challenges in the long-term sustainability of the industry, to ensure a healthy ocean environment.

Since 2013, we have been on the steering committees that develop improvement protocols for aquaculture and wild caught seafood, by adapting sustainability programs created in other markets for the Asian seafood industry.

Verité works to promote ethical labor practice in the seafood sector through advocacy and research that sheds further light on the problem, and through development of resources and approaches that help governments and companies build practical, sustainable solutions.

Through our US subsidiary, Chicken of the Sea, we are working with Verité to audit suppliers and help them develop new policies and better management systems to address labor issues.

The Seafood Task Force (formerly the Shrimp Sustainable Supply Chain Task Force) is a multi-stakeholder alliance of European and American retailers, their suppliers, NGOs and the major Thai shrimp processors and feed companies.

As a member of the Seafood Task Force, Thai Union is working towards key deliverable objectives designed to drive positive change in the industry.
Migrant Workers Rights Network (MWRN)

Migrant Workers Rights Network (MWRN)

MWRN promotes and strengthens Myanmar migrant workers’ rights, primarily those residing and working in Thailand. It is a key partner for Thai Union, supporting us on a number of initiatives to ensure all workers enjoy safe and legal labor.

At our request, MWRN has developed a social dialog project in which it speaks to migrant workers on-the-ground in factories and outside the factories without any member of Thai Union present so it can gain a true and honest assessment of the experience of workers. MWRN is working with us to train migrant workers on their human and employment rights, as well as on our ethical migrant recruitment policy. It is also supporting us by providing an independent audit of the labor practices of our supply chain in Thailand.

LPN is committed to protecting and improving the lives of migrant workers in Thailand. It advocates for equality both in the workplace and the community, and helps families integrate into the Thai society.

Thai Union has worked with LPN since 2013 providing migrant workers with training and guidance on child labor, their children’s rights to education, and school enrollment.
Issara Institute

Issara means ‘freedom’ in several Southeast Asian languages. The Issara Institute works to tackle human trafficking and forced labor in Southeast Asia.

Issara Institute provides workers with a telephone helpline and social media app – both provide advice and allow workers to report abuse they may have witnessed. We are introducing Issara helplines at all Thai Union factories and ports.

ILO is a tripartite United Nations agency that brings together governments, employers and worker representatives of 187 member states. It aims to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialog on work-related issues.

Thai Union has worked with ILO on its Good Labor Practices (GLP) program since 2013; setting standards throughout our entire supply chain to ensure no child or forced labor is used and that workers are free, legally employed, safe, and do not suffer discrimination.
